In a first for Minn., woman pregnant from frozen donor egg
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - In the first known case in Minnesota, a woman has become pregnant from a human donor egg that was frozen and thawed before it was fertilized and implanted.
Doctors used in vitro fertilization to achieve the pregnancy in the 48-year-old woman, who is nine weeks pregnant.
Her pregnancy means that egg freezing is now available in Minnesota, though it's a controversial technology that many say isn't ready for prime time.
Jacques Stassart of Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Associates in Woodbury is the woman's doctor. He says the technology is still experimental -- but the clinic will offer it on a case-by-case basis. He plans to market it to cancer doctors for young women at risk of losing their fertility from medical treatments.
